How do I download or print a whole book from Google Docs tabs?
In File → Download, change the tab setting from Current tab to All tabs; in File → Print, choose Print all tabs. Tools → Word count only ever counts the tab you are in.
Downloading and printing every tab
Tabs are separate pages of one document. A download starts on the tab you are in, so a book kept one chapter to a tab can leave as a single chapter unless you change that.
- Download. Choose File → Download and a format. Docs then asks whether you want the current tab or all tabs, and the choice starts on the current one. Pick All tabs before you export.
- Print. File → Print offers the same pair of choices: print the current tab, or print all of them.
- Word count. Tools → Word count reports on the open tab and nothing more. No total across tabs is offered.
Check the file before you send it. A download left on the default holds one chapter, and nothing in the file name says so.
Getting a total word count
For the book's length, add up the tabs by hand, or download all tabs as a Word file and read the count there. A few writers keep one extra tab at the end with a running table of chapter counts. It works as long as someone remembers to update it.
If you share the document for feedback, the same rule applies to readers: a reviewer who downloads a copy may get one chapter without noticing. Say which option to choose, or send the all-tabs file yourself.
In Tabularia
The manuscript is one document from the first page to the last, with chapters as rows in the Outline rather than tabs. So the whole book is what an export contains unless you pick a narrower scope, and printing goes through your browser's print dialog with the designed page. With the Working Scope on Whole Manuscript, the header counts the book, and each Outline row shows its own chapter's count at the same time, so neither number costs you the other.
To move a book over, download it from Docs as a Word file with all tabs included, then import that DOCX. Chapters come from Heading 1 titles. How Docs writes each tab's name into the file is up to Docs, so read the Outline after the import and restyle any chapter title that arrived as plain text.
