Offline and on other devices
What to do when your writing app needs a connection, or does not run on the device you now write on.
When the app and the device disagree
These answers start from a writer whose tool will not follow them somewhere: onto a plane, onto a Windows laptop, or onto an Android phone. Some are about a browser app that needs a connection. Others are about a well-loved desktop app that exists on one system and not the next, or one that has stopped being offered where you write.
The common thread is getting the words out whole. That part is rarely hard. Each page covers what the current tool can do about it, then how to move the manuscript in an open format so it stays yours whichever program opens it next.
The answers
- Can I write a novel offline in a browser app? — What offline mode means, Google Docs setup, and a test to run before you travel.
- Scrivener for Windows is missing Mac features — Checking your version, what still differs, and moving a project between systems.
- Is there Scrivener for Linux, a Chromebook, or Android? — The Wine workaround, a browser route, and what does not come back.
- Is there Ulysses for Windows or Android? — Exporting a Ulysses library to Markdown or TextBundle.
- iA Writer left Android. What now? — What iA announced, and moving plain Markdown files to another editor.
Try it on your own manuscript
Nothing is metered: as many projects as you like at any length, the outline and minimap to move through them, drafts and markup mode for revising, snapshots to return to, sheets and timelines beside the page, and export to DOCX, PDF, EPUB, HTML, Markdown, plain text and Fountain. Bring in what you have already written and read it back as a book.
The Cloud plan is $18 a month, or $172.80 a year, and adds backup, sync across your devices, sharing a manuscript for review, and publishing your work as a web page — the readers and collaborators you invite do not need a paid account of their own. Tabularia is in Public Beta and shipping steadily; the release notes record what has landed.
