Answers for writers getting started with Tabularia.
Practical guidance for manuscripts, storage, sync, billing, privacy, and the writing workflow.
Getting Started
What is Tabularia?
Tabularia is a writing app for long-form work of any kind, from novels and nonfiction to screenplays and articles. You write the whole piece as one continuous manuscript, typeset as you go, with its outline, timelines, and reference Sheets beside the text. Drafts and redlines let you try changes next to the original, and when it is ready you export a finished PDF, EPUB, or Word file.
Where does the name come from?
Tabularia comes from the Latin word for archives or record rooms. The name reflects a workspace that keeps your writing, earlier versions, and supporting material together.
Who is Tabularia for?
Anyone doing long-form writing. Novelists and nonfiction authors get a full book workflow, screenwriters get screenplay format with scene numbers and Script Reports, plus Fountain and Final Draft import and export, and writers of articles and blog posts get an article format of their own. If the writing is long and changes as you revise it, it belongs here.
Does Tabularia replace my word processor?
Yes. It covers what you would use a word processor for, from the first draft through revision, page layout, and export, and it holds a whole book as one manuscript instead of separate chapter files. Word files still import, and you can export a Word file whenever an editor or publisher asks for one.
Can I start from a story structure?
Yes. Story shapes seed editable Acts, Chapters, and notes without writing your prose. Choose a structure at the start or add one later. See Story shapes for the available outlines.
Which browsers and devices does Tabularia support?
Chrome 125+, Edge 125+, Firefox 140+, or Safari 18+. iPhone requires iOS 18+, and iPad requires iPadOS 18+. Computers and tablets show the designed pages with every tool. A phone switches to a single writing column that keeps writing and formatting but leaves out the page view, rulers, and minimap.
Writing And Manuscripts
What do the Local and Cloud plans include?
The Local plan is $199 USD once, including one year of support and updates. Optional renewal is $49/year afterward. The Cloud subscription adds hosted features such as backup and sync. See the Pricing page for what each plan includes.
How is Tabularia paid for?
Local licenses and Cloud subscriptions fund the service. There is no advertising, and we do not sell your writing or personal information.
Are manuscripts stored locally or online?
Your projects are always saved on your device, whether you write in the installed app or in a browser. The Cloud plan adds an online copy for backup and sync across devices. Clearing the site data for Tabularia removes the copy on that device, so keep independent exports.
Can I write while Tabularia is offline?
Yes. Once signed in and opened on a device, the installed app can reopen local projects for offline writing and export, subject to your plan or evaluation. Initial sign-in and cloud-only work require a connection.
Sharing, billing, and account management also need internet access. On reconnection, queued changes sync after a compatibility check and any required update.
Can I import an existing manuscript?
Yes. Import common writing formats, including Word and Markdown, or supported project folders, including Scrivener. Conversion happens on your device. PDFs are best-effort, and scanned PDFs need OCR elsewhere. See Importing for formats and limitations.
Can I export or print my manuscript?
Yes. Export DOCX, PDF, EPUB, and other common formats. Final PDF and EPUB exports require a Local license or active Cloud subscription. Every account can also export a complete project archive for backup.
Print uses the paginated PDF rather than the workspace. See Exporting for formatting, printing, and archive restore.
Are there limits on how much I can write or store?
Writing is unmetered. Both plans allow 10 GB of images across your projects. Each image can be up to 25 MB.
Published pages allow 1 GB of images and a 32 MB document. Reader PDF or EPUB downloads can be up to 90 MB.
Do I have to format my book at the end?
Tabularia typesets pages as you write, using your chosen styles and book settings. You can refine those settings at any stage rather than assemble the book afterward. Review the exported file before publishing.
Can I take my work elsewhere?
Yes. Export your writing in common formats other applications can read. Your work remains yours, and nothing becomes public unless you publish it.
What happens if I clear browser data?
Clearing site data can delete local writing and settings. Cloud copies and independently saved exports remain separate. A backup folder on your disk also survives browser clearing. Persistent browser storage reduces automatic eviction, not deliberate deletion. See Backups and offline access .
Can I use Tabularia on more than one device?
Yes. Sign in on any computer, tablet, or phone. Each device keeps its own copy of your projects. The Cloud plan syncs them, so the same projects are on every device; without it, move a project by exporting a complete project archive and importing it on the other device. The first time on each device, sign in while online; after that it works offline and picks up updates whenever it is next online.
Can I write a series in one project?
Yes. One project can hold several books, each with its own chapters, matter, and book settings. Writing statistics can count a single book or the whole series.
Can I get back an older version?
Yes. History records your changes so you can step back through them, and a Snapshot saves a named point you can return to. With the Cloud plan, History and Snapshots are also backed up online.
Can I try a rewrite without losing the original?
Yes. Start a draft to rewrite a passage, a chapter, or the whole book, and compare it with the original as redlines. Merge the changes you want a difference at a time; the rest stays as it was.
Can I share my manuscript with beta readers or an editor?
Yes, with the Cloud plan. Invite Readers to read what you choose, or Editors to work in their own copy that you review and merge a difference at a time. Neither needs a paid plan, and you can remove anyone’s access whenever you like.
Can I publish my book as a web page?
Yes, with the Cloud plan. A published page shows your book as its typeset pages for readers to scroll through. Keep it to a private link if you prefer, and offer PDF or EPUB downloads if you want readers to have a copy.
Billing
What does the 14-day Local plan evaluation include?
Your first entry into Tabularia starts 14 days of writing and revision, including import and typesetting preview. No card is required. Final PDF and EPUB exports require purchase. After expiry, your own projects stay saved and open read-only, every export except final PDF and EPUB still works, including a complete project archive, and manuscripts others share with you keep working. A Local license or Cloud subscription restores editing.
Who processes payments?
Stripe processes payments. Tabularia does not store full card numbers or bank details.
Can I change or cancel a subscription?
Yes. Your account page provides Cloud cancellation, payment methods, and invoices through Stripe, plus pause and resume controls. Pausing switches off hosted features while keeping existing cloud content readable, downloadable, and deletable. A separately purchased Local license continues.
Optional Local support and update renewal also has setup, pause, and resume controls on your account page. Stopping renewal preserves your included or paid updates period and never ends your Local license.
What happens when my evaluation ends?
Nothing you wrote is lost. Tabularia still opens, and your own projects open read-only, so you can read them and export them to Word or Markdown files or to a complete project archive. Projects other people share with you keep working as their owner’s plan allows. Buying the Local plan or subscribing to Cloud makes your projects editable again.
What happens if a Cloud payment fails or my subscription ends?
If a renewal payment fails, Cloud keeps working for 7 days while you update your card from your account page. If the subscription ends, sync, sharing, and publishing stop, but your writing stays saved: a Local license keeps your projects editable, and without one they open read-only, ready to export.
Does my Local license expire?
No. The license is yours to keep and includes one year of support and feature updates. After that, renew updates for $49 a year, or keep using the last release you were entitled to; security and data-integrity fixes continue either way.
Why a one-time license instead of a subscription?
Because a book can take years, and the software you write it in should not change under you just to justify another bill. You pay for the Local license once, and it never runs out.
The optional $49 yearly renewal pays for maintenance and support. It does not pay for version numbers, so Tabularia changes when there is a reason to change it rather than whenever an upgrade needs selling. If you like the release you have, stay on it. Your account page lets you hold a release while you go on renewing, and if you stop renewing, the release you have stays yours.
Can I have both the Local and Cloud plans?
Yes. The Cloud plan includes everything in the Local plan while you subscribe, and a Local license you bought separately stays yours if Cloud ends. While Cloud is active, a separate Local updates renewal is paused.
Can I buy for my business?
Yes. Choose business use on the pricing page before checkout, and add your company’s tax ID at checkout so it appears on your invoice. The prices and features are the same, starting at $199 for the Local plan.
Is there a plan for teams or publishers?
A Team plan is coming, with team-owned projects, member roles, and one bill for everyone. Get in touch if you would like to hear when it opens.
Do you offer student, educator, or nonprofit pricing?
Not yet. If you are interested, get in touch and tell us about your work.
Security And Privacy
Does Tabularia sell my manuscript or personal information?
No. We do not sell your writing or personal information, or use manuscript content for behavioral advertising. Only a draft you choose to publish becomes public. See the Privacy Policy .
Is my manuscript encrypted?
Yes. Your writing is encrypted with TLS whenever it travels and with AES-256 wherever it is stored in the cloud. The encryption keys are managed by Cloudflare, our hosting provider, which is what lets sync, sharing, and publishing work on every device you sign in on. Staff read manuscript content only when you ask for help with it or the law requires it.
When is my manuscript sent to the cloud?
Your own projects sync under the Cloud plan. Shared work can sync under its owner’s subscription. The Local plan otherwise keeps writing on your device.
Does Tabularia use AI on my work?
Tabularia never trains AI on your writing and never sends it to an AI provider on its own. You may connect an assistant of your choice, and whether that provider trains on what it reads is a setting in that assistant. The remote connector needs the Cloud plan. Supported browser tools can also reach an open session, including unsynced work.
Prose changes normally arrive in a draft for review. Direct edits and book setup changes take a Snapshot first. Supporting material can change directly. Your assistant controls its own permissions, retention, and training settings. See AI assistants for capabilities and limits.
How do I delete my account?
On your account page, expand Permanent deletion. You may need to sign in again. Deletion removes cloud projects, account records, and site data in the current browser, and it deletes your customer record at Stripe, which ends any subscription. The only owner of a team cannot delete the account until ownership moves to another member. Your public handle is held for two years after deletion. Export anything you want to keep first.
