Words to Pages Calculator
Type your word count and choose how the book will be set. The page count comes from typesetting a real novel on that page, not from a flat words-per-page rule.
Your page count
275 pages
About 292 words a page. For a spine or a printer's quote, count 276 pages: a printed book is made of leaves, so the total is always even.

How many pages is a novel?
Most adult novels run somewhere between 70,000 and 100,000 words, so the honest answer is a range, and where you land in it depends less on the story than on the page.
A smaller trim holds fewer words. So does a larger type size, a looser leading, or a face that sets wide, and they compound: the same manuscript runs far longer at 12 pt on a small paperback than at 10 pt on a 6 × 9 hardcover. Try both above. The old rule of 250 words a page describes a double-spaced typescript, not a printed book.
How the count is measured
Your browser typesets the first five chapters of The Count of Monte Cristo with the same layout engine Tabularia uses for print and PDF, then divides the words by the pages they fill.
- The trims, fonts, and sizes are exactly the ones the Studio offers.
- Margins are the Studio's print margins for that trim.
- Leading is 1.5 times the type size, with no space between paragraphs.
- Before your browser has typeset anything, the figures come from the same engine setting a 100,000-word slice of Les Misérables.
- Each chapter opens on a new page, as in the sample. Front matter and blank pages are not counted.
Try it on your own manuscript
Nothing is metered: as many projects as you like at any length, the outline and minimap to move through them, drafts and markup mode for revising, snapshots to return to, sheets and timelines beside the page, and export to DOCX, PDF, EPUB, HTML, Markdown, plain text and Fountain. Bring in what you have already written and read it back as a book.
The Cloud plan is $18 a month, or $172.80 a year, and adds backup, sync across your devices, sharing a manuscript for review, and publishing your work as a web page — the readers and collaborators you invite do not need a paid account of their own. Tabularia is in Public Beta and shipping steadily; the release notes record what has landed.
