What the classics show

There is no rule. A chapter ends where the story wants a breath, and classic novels stretch that a long way in both directions.

Longer books mostly add chapters instead of lengthening them. War and Peace runs past half a million words on chapters of about 1,500, while Sons and Lovers needs only 15 chapters, most of them over 10,000 words. Genre moves the typical chapter too, although each genre below rests on a handful of books.

Typical chapter by genre
Genre Novels Typical chapter Middle half
Gothic/horror 5 4,192 2,600–5,892
Mystery 3 3,849 3,558–3,926
Western/pulp 3 3,220 2,717–3,846
Adventure 10 3,180 2,671–3,820
Literary 25 3,075 2,133–4,228
Romance 8 2,832 2,187–3,172
Children's 9 2,466 1,913–2,695
Science fiction 5 1,972 1,939–1,987

Read the range as a check rather than a target. Short chapters pull a reader forward; a long one asks them to settle in. If a chapter feels too long, it may be two scenes that want a break between them.

How chapters are found and counted

Your file goes through the importer Tabularia itself uses, so the chapters here are the ones an import would make:

  • In a Word file, each Heading 1 starts a chapter.
  • In Markdown, chapters come from the shallowest heading level the file uses more than once.
  • In plain text, a line such as Chapter 12 or Chapter Twelve, set apart by blank lines, starts one.

Words are counted the way the Tabularia header counts them: anything between spaces is a word. The classic figures were counted with that same rule, across 3,632 chapters from 68 Project Gutenberg novels and novellas. Each book's typical chapter is its median, and the headline is the median of those, so a book with 365 short chapters counts once.
